Over the many years of studying herbalism, I find that Stinging Nettles is one of the most magical plants. I suspect that most people searching for magical plants might want something more exotic or gravitate towards a plant that is known to be more dreamy or powerful. However, I suggest that Nettles is all of that and more. 

Not only is Nettles useful for healing an array of physical ailments, a source of fiber for making clothes, food, and magic. 

Elements and Herbal Uses of Nettles

Nettles is associated with the planet Mars due to its sting and elemental makeup. In medical astrology, this herb is related to excessive Mars conditions in the body and a lack of Mars conditions, such as drive and will power. 

Mars is a planet that rules the astrological sign of Aries, which in this case, Nettles rulers are Aries and Mars. Nettles is best harvested in spring when the sun transits through Aries. A coincidence? I think not. 

Nettles is also associated with the element of fire yet has an affinity for the waters in the body. Decreasing inflammation, gout, and stagnation through its powerful elimination properties on the kidneys. 

Nettles contain many vitamins, minerals, protein, and constituents to heal, build, and support the body and bone structure. Therefore, Nettles makes a delicious addition to food through pestos, soups, and more. When cooking with Nettles, it’s essential to blanch or cook first to avoid stinging the back of your throat. This is not an herb to eat raw. 

Nettles’ mineral content makes it useful for building bones, hair, and nails through its high silica content. One of Nettles’ magical aspects is that it’s a tropho-restorative herb, which means it brings back function to atrophied organs and body systems such as the kidneys, thyroid, hormones, muscles, nerves, and more. 

One more fun fact about Nettles is the urtication possible with the sting of the herb. Throughout history and in many cultures today, especially in Ecuador, Russian bathhouses, and herbalists who know this magic, one can lightly tap Nettles and other herbs over the body to induce a sting. Urtication is known to assist with arthritis and create stimulation and heat throughout the entire body.
