Rest Is Resistance

How to Learn to Rest and Dismantle Colonization

Reflecting on the past year and beyond of taking a sabbath on Mondays, I’ve been learning a lot about rest. The revolution began when I read The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, a book by a pastor who studied Jewish religion to understand the sabbath.

I wanted to dive into this revolution because my father’s lineage is Jewish heritage. How to not be enslaved by giving my time over to colonization, the constant feeling that I must produce, create, and live in a world where, even as a creative herbalist and psychedelic integrative coach, it feels like resting and not doing more is not allowed.

Through the year, I began to see that detaching myself from the need to be “doing something” was tough. The internal dialogue playing out about how I’m not enough.

It got me thinking about how, while working a 9 to 5, I dreamt of the life I have now. Yet, finding moments of true joy and contentment was still hard. The sabbath healed a substantial portion of my desire to be more.

Now, I’m reading Rest Is Resistance by Trica Hersey, the founder of the Nap Ministry.

The tears flow consistently as the voice of my maternal lineage is read to me on the audiobook. Line for line, I hear the voice of my mother and grandmother. “Work twice as hard as everyone else to get half the same privileges.”

The grind, hustle culture, all of that. My ancestors worked hard, so I didn’t have to.

Did your ancestors?

How are you honoring their dream for you?

That is what rest and my preferred herbal allies continue to teach.

The lessons of honoring the dreams of those who came before us.

The privilege is real and must be honored, not deterred. You are meant to thrive, not struggle. Don’t waste your ancestors’ work by getting caught up in what you have and others don’t.

Instead, do as nature teaches – Take what you have and benefit the world with your gift.

Shine bright, do your passion, and live your dreams.

You owe it to the past generations and the future generations.

You are here as a gardener, planting fruit trees that may not bear fruit until long after you depart, but it’s vital for all those who come after.

One of my most recent conversations surrounding rest with a potential client had her questioning — how do I create this life with pockets of rest?

It reminds me of the workshop I taught, Ritual As Routine.

If you’re ready to hone in on your ritualistic schedule for your life, there is no better time than now.
